Many years ago back in 1995, my record collection was gaining momentum, especially being based in the small town of Australind, Western Australia. I was – and still am – a huge fan of Melbourne-based metal band Mortification, which in those early days were in their prime as being the biggest death metal act to come out of Australia and with being a Christian band too, was a huge feat to achieve from anyone’s imagination.
Rowe Productions was a new and growing label headed by Steve Rowe, bass player and founding member of Mortification. His desire to have quality metal bands join his label, especially from Australia, was a passionate thing indeed. With bands such as Ethereal Scourge, Horde, Cry Mercy, and Fearscape being on the label, there was one particular one that stood out.
With quality death metal still making its way through Christian circles, Townsville band Metanoia presented themselves as a serious contender within the upcoming extreme metal scene. With albums In Darkness or in Light (1995), Don’t Walk Dead (1998) and Time to Die (1999) released throughout their time in the 1990’s, the band somewhat dissolved and disbanded in 2000.
The last existing members consisted of:
- Ian Northey – drums (1996–1999)
- Simon “Psycho” Pankhurst – vocals (1998–1999)
- Lisa “Spud” Bennett – bass (1990–1999)
- Steve “Yak” Bennett – guitar (1990–1999), rhythm guitar (1999)
Most honorable members who helped with the band’s early success:
- Dylan Speerstra – drums (1990–1996)
- Justin “Yowie” Smith – vocals (1994–1998)
Founding member Steve Bennett has given word that he is currently writing new music under the Metanoia name. No word has been given to what the nature of the genre it will be, however we can rest assured that it will be metal.
