Canadian multi-instrumentalist Christopher Adam is back with a new chapter in his solo project Refiner—a follow-up EP titled Mistake, arriving May 16 on Rottweiler Records.
Earlier this year, Adam dropped Return to Dust, a bold introduction that flirted with metalcore aggression, cinematic electronics, and atmospheric textures. With Mistake, he widens the lens, pushing the contrast further, turning up the tension, and digging into the darker corners of his sonic psyche.
The opening track, “upside uʍop”, pulses like a midnight city under stormlight, blending distorted guitars, textured synths, and dynamic vocals in a swirling, volatile mix. There’s beauty in the disarray, and Adam leans into it fully.
The EP’s title track, “Mistake”, shifts gears into something more sweeping. Grand, layered, and emotionally raw, it carries the weight of collapse and clarity in the same breath. Vocals rise and recede like crashing waves, surrounded by crashing riffs and shimmering electronics that feel both sacred and unstable.
For those who like to dissect the bones beneath the flesh, instrumental versions of both tracks will be made available exclusively on Bandcamp, a nod to producers, sound nerds, and fans of pure texture.
Refiner doesn’t play by genre rules. This is emotional architecture, metal built with modern tools, but rooted in very human wounds.
